Expanding the Possibilities of Personalized Medicine Through Collaborative Data Collection, Sharing, and Analysis

In this era of health data explosion thanks to the advancements in genome sequencing technologies, more electronic health records in different health systems, more patient registries, social media networks, medical and nonmedical device data systems (e.g., smartphones, fitness monitors, etc.), and advanced analytic tools, personalized medicine has never looked more promising.

Our panelists are part of a great group of companies that generate and analyze data to advance personalized medicine: BioVU Partnerships collaborates with researchers to study genotype-phenotype associations using BioVU’s over 180,000 samples of DNA repository obtained from patients; GRAIL focuses on the early detection of cancer using ctDNA and creates vast datasets through one of the largest clinical trial programs ever pursued in genomic medicine; Singlera Genomics develops non-invasive genetics testing methods and Med Data Quest applies machine learning to extract insights from EHR; and McKinsey is one of the leading consulting firms guiding investors and biotech companies in the field of personalized medicine.

Key questions to be addressed include:

  • With all of the data that we are able to generate, one may wonder, does “the bigger, the better” apply when it comes to the data in personalized medicine?
  • Data science helps us find correlations between data and underlying diseases. How can we improve our ability to analyze the data and distinguish the signal from the noise?
  • Personalized medicine is becoming an increasingly larger market. How do we take it to the next level? How can we better translate insights gained from the data to disease diagnosis, drug development, and treatment?
  • What is the best business model for data collaboration in personalized medicine?
